Exploring the Heritage Centre

Updated: Dec 28, 2019

Once the Shoebury Heritage Centre is open, you will be very welcome to come and browse inside during opening hours. You will see permanent exhibits which are key to Shoebury's story, as well as temporary displays focussing on particular aspects of the history.

Don't forget to look at the building itself! The Heritage Centre is housed in the old Cart & Wagon Shed, built in 1861 when everything had to be moved around the site by horse or man-power. The cast iron frame of the building is the earliest part of the building and is a Listed structure.

Our collection includes over 6,000 photographic images which we are restoring and uploading to computers for people to browse in the Heritage Centre. If you are interesting in a particular topic, speak to one of our volunteers; they may be able to find out if we have a relevant photo in our archive.
